Hocking Hills Airbnb, VRBO or Book Direct?
On this page
A Hocking Hills Airbnb, a VRBO and a direct booking can be the very same cabin at three different prices. The difference is mostly fees: Airbnb and VRBO add or build in their own service charges, while booking direct with the owner skips them. At our cabin, a night that costs $500 direct is $575 on Airbnb, about 13% more.
We list Serenity Lodge on Airbnb and VRBO and take direct bookings, so here's how the three compare, as plainly as we can put it.

How Airbnb fees work in 2026
Airbnb charges a service fee on every stay. Under its older split structure, guests pay 14.1% to 16.5% of the booking subtotal at checkout, and the host pays about 3%.
Airbnb is moving most hosts to a single fee instead, where about 15.5% comes out of the host's payout and the guest sees one total price. Either way the fee ends up in what you pay, which is why the same cabin usually costs more there.
How VRBO fees work
VRBO adds a traveler service fee at checkout, a percentage of the booking subtotal that varies with the amount. Hosts can't waive it.
On the host side, VRBO announced that it would move hosts to a single 12% commission on October 29, 2026. For our listing, VRBO's fees run lower than Airbnb's, which is why we offer it alongside Airbnb on our booking page.
Why booking direct costs less
When you book direct, there's no platform in the middle taking a cut, so the owner can charge less and still come out even. Our Hocking Hills cabin prices start at $300 a night, plus a $150 cleaning fee, with no pet fee and no extra-guest fee.
You also talk to the owner from the first question. At our cabin that's Dana, who reviews every request herself.
The trade-off is that you're trusting a smaller business instead of a platform. Before you pay any owner directly, check that the reviews and photos match a listing you can see elsewhere, read the cancellation policy, and pay by card through a real booking system, never by wire or gift card.

What to check before booking any Hocking Hills, Ohio, Airbnb
Whatever site you use, a Hocking Hills, Ohio, Airbnb listing can hide a few surprises. Before you book:
- Drive time. "Hocking Hills" covers a wide area. Check the minutes to Old Man's Cave or Ash Cave, not just the town name.
- Privacy. Ask how close the next cabin is, and whether the hot tub or land is shared.
- Pets. Some cabins ban dogs, some cap them, and some charge a fee per dog.
- The total. Compare the final price with cleaning and service fees, not the nightly rate.
- Signal. Cell service is weak in much of the area, so ask about Wi-Fi.

Hocking Hills Airbnb FAQs
Is it cheaper to book a Hocking Hills Airbnb direct?
Booking a Hocking Hills Airbnb direct with the owner is usually cheaper, because there's no platform service fee. At Serenity Lodge, a $500 night direct costs $575 on Airbnb, about 13% more. Not every owner takes direct bookings, and prices vary by cabin, so compare the final total with all fees on both sites.
Is VRBO cheaper than Airbnb in Hocking Hills?
VRBO is sometimes cheaper than Airbnb in Hocking Hills, but it depends on the cabin. Both platforms charge service fees and each host sets prices for each site, though for our listing VRBO's fees run lower than Airbnb's. Compare the final checkout total on both sites, with taxes and cleaning fees, before you book.
Can I move my Airbnb booking to a direct booking?
You can't move an existing Airbnb booking to a direct booking. Reservations made on Airbnb stay on Airbnb, and changes to dates, guests or pets go through Airbnb's own change tool. Future stays can be booked wherever you like, and a direct booking means you deal with the owner from the first message.
Is booking direct with a cabin owner safe?
Booking direct with a cabin owner is safe when you take a few precautions. Check that the photos and reviews match a listing you can see on another site, read the written cancellation policy, and pay by card through a booking system. Never pay a stranger by wire transfer, a payment app or gift cards.
