Swimming in Hocking Hills State Park isn't allowed: the park bans swimming and wading in any water, including the pools under the waterfalls. For a swim, head to the beaches at Lake Hope State Park or Lake Logan State Park, or to the city pool in Logan in summer.

Lake Hope's beach is 19 minutes from our cabin. And if you stay with us, guests can swim in the pond on the property at their own risk.

Why you can't swim in the state park

The Hocking Hills State Park map is blunt: no swimming or wading in any water. That covers the pools under Cedar Falls and Old Man's Cave, the Devil's Bathtub, the creeks along the gorge trails and Rose Lake.

The same map asks visitors to stay on the marked trails. Every named waterfall in the park can be seen from the trail, so you won't miss anything by staying dry.

Rose Lake is open for fishing and small boats, just not for a swim. Our guide to Hocking Hills fishing covers it.

Lake Hope: the closest beach to the park

Lake Hope State Park has a 600-foot swimming beach near the dam, and swimming is allowed in the designated areas. It's 19 minutes from our cabin.

Pets aren't allowed on the beach, and the park asks swimmers to use caution. Check the park page for water advisories before you go.

Lake Hope is a calm lake for paddling too, since only hand-powered and electric boats are allowed. The boathouse rents canoes, kayaks and paddleboards in season.

Lake Logan: a free beach with no lifeguards

Lake Logan State Park is a 400-acre lake near Logan, with a 527-foot public beach on the north shore along Lake Logan Road. There's no admission charge, and the beach is open year-round.

It's the other free beach for swimming in Hocking Hills, but there are no lifeguards, so everyone swims at their own risk. Keep young kids within arm's reach, and bring water and sunscreen.

Hocking Hills swimming in a pool

For pool swimming, the Logan city pool opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes the weekend before Logan-Hocking schools start classes. In 2026 it was open daily from noon to 6 p.m., with adult lap swim on some weekday evenings.

Admission is paid in cash or by check, and cards carry an extra service fee. The city posts each summer's prices on its pool page.

Can you swim in the Hocking River?

The Hocking River is better for floating than swimming. Liveries near Logan rent tubes, kayaks and canoes in summer and set trips by the water level, so read our guide to Hocking Hills tubing before you go.

Wear the life jacket the livery hands you. Skip the river for a day or two after a storm, when it can rise fast.

A pond of your own at Serenity Lodge

Our Hocking Hills cabin with private pond sits on 97 acres, and guests are welcome to swim in the pond at their own risk. There's no lifeguard, so watch little ones closely around the water.

Our pick

For swimming in Hocking Hills with kids, Lake Hope's beach is the easy choice: calm water, a short drive from the park, and boats to rent afterward. Hike in the morning while it's cool, swim in the afternoon, and you've covered the best of a summer day.

Swimming in Hocking Hills FAQs

Is there a swimming hole in Hocking Hills?

There's no public swimming hole in Hocking Hills State Park, because the park bans swimming and wading in all of its water, from the waterfall pools to the creeks. For a natural swim, use the beaches at Lake Hope or Lake Logan. Some private rentals have ponds, and at our cabin guests can swim in the pond at their own risk.

Are there lifeguards at the Hocking Hills beaches?

There are no lifeguards at the Lake Logan beach, where Ohio State Parks says visitors swim at their own risk. The Lake Hope page asks swimmers to use caution and doesn't mention lifeguards, so plan as if no one is watching the water. Keep children within reach and bring a life jacket for weak swimmers.

Can you swim in Rose Lake?

You can't swim in Rose Lake, because it sits inside Hocking Hills State Park, where swimming and wading aren't allowed in any water. Rose Lake is open for fishing and for paddling or electric-motor boats, which you carry in on a half-mile trail. For a swim nearby, drive to the beach at Lake Hope or Lake Logan.

When is the Logan pool open?

The Logan city pool opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes the weekend before Logan-Hocking schools start classes. In 2026 it was open every day from noon to 6 p.m., with adult lap swim on some weekday evenings. Bring cash or a check, since cards carry an extra service fee.

Can dogs swim at the Hocking Hills beaches?

Dogs can't use the swimming beach at Lake Hope State Park, where pets aren't permitted on the beach, and they can't swim anywhere in Hocking Hills State Park. Our guide to whether Hocking Hills is dog friendly covers the trails and spots where leashed dogs are welcome. At our cabin, dogs have 97 acres of fields to run.
