Hocking Hills Fall Colors: When and Where to Go
On this page
Hocking Hills fall colors usually peak in late October and can run into early November. Southern Ohio turns last in the state, after Cleveland and Columbus. Look from the rims and ridges: the gorges are lined with evergreen hemlocks.
Fall is our busiest season at the cabin, and October weekends book first. If you can come midweek, you'll have the trails and the color with fewer people.
When the Hocking Hills fall colors peak
Ohio DNR's fall color forester puts out a forecast each September, and southern Ohio, where the Hocking Hills sit, comes last.
| Year | Ohio DNR forecast for southern Ohio |
|---|---|
| 2025 | The last week of October |
| 2026 | The end of October into early November |
Northern Ohio peaks first, around mid-October, then central Ohio. In 2026, Ohio DNR started weekly color updates on October 1. If you're still deciding on the best time to visit Hocking Hills, check them the week before your trip, since a warm spell or an early freeze can move the peak by days.
Why some years glow brighter
Leaves change as trees slow down for winter and make less green chlorophyll. That uncovers the yellows and oranges that were there all along. The reds and purples are made fresh in fall, and sunny days with cool nights bring out the most.
Rain matters too. In a drought, stressed trees drop leaves early and color comes in patchy, which is what Ohio DNR warned about in the dry fall of 2025. A wet late summer, like 2026's, sets up a stronger show, Spectrum News reported.
Where to see the Hocking Hills fall foliage
The trick is height. Down in the gorges, hemlocks stay green and the light is dim, so the best Hocking Hills fall foliage is on the ridges and seen from the rims.
- The Conkle's Hollow rim, a 2-mile loop along cliff tops nearly 200 feet up, has some of the best fall colors Hocking Hills, Ohio offers. No pets.
- Cantwell Cliffs, at the north end of the park, has a rugged rim and gorge loop rated difficult.
- At Rock House, seven openings in the cliff frame the trees outside like windows.
- Ash Cave is the easy option: a paved quarter mile to the largest recess cave in Ohio, with color along the rim above.
- For a view from the canopy, a Hocking Hills zip line tour runs through November.
- State Route 374, the Hocking Hills Scenic Byway, runs 25 miles past Hocking State Forest and the park. It's a good drive on a rainy color day.
- Lake Hope State Park is a wooded lake with trails, 19 minutes from our cabin.
For the trail details, see our guides to Conkle's Hollow, Hocking Hills and the Hocking Hills caves.
Hocking Hills State Park fall colors, trail by trail
The Hocking Hills State Park fall colors play out differently on each trail. At Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls you walk under hemlocks, with hardwoods lighting up the rim overhead. Waterfalls are usually low in fall unless it has rained, so go for the trees, not the water.
On the rims, the color is all around you. That's why the Conkle's Hollow rim and Cantwell Cliffs are worth the climb in late October, and why the gorge walks are better in spring.

Hocking Hills in the fall: crowds and timing
Hocking Hills in the fall is the busiest the region gets. Trails open half an hour before sunrise, so start at opening for the quietest walk.
A few things help:
- Go midweek if you can, and save the big-name trails for weekdays.
- On a Saturday, start somewhere other than Old Man's Cave, the most popular spot in the region.
- The Old Man's Cave visitor center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., so plan restroom and map stops around it.
- Book early, whichever of the Hocking Hills places to stay you choose. At our cabin, October weekends go first.
Our pick for a color weekend
For Hocking Hills fall colors at their best, walk the Conkle's Hollow rim at opening on a weekday in late October. Drive the scenic byway or take a Hocking Hills train ride in the afternoon, then finish with a short walk to Ash Cave. Our Hocking Hills itinerary lays out a full weekend.
On our own 97 acres, the whole property turns red and gold, so the porch is a fine place to watch it too. Our page on Hocking Hills cabin prices has the fall rates, and our guide to things to do in Hocking Hills covers the rest of the region.
